HISTORY
UCA San Juan de Río Coco is a dynamic union of eight cooperatives uniting 370 smallholder farmers, including 80 women, in the northern highlands of Nicaragua. Founded in 1993, it has long been a pioneer of organic coffee, supporting its members with credit, training, and access to international markets. Today, the cooperative is strengthening its independence with plans for a dedicated tasting lab, upgraded infrastructure, and a new agro-business center to improve efficiency and services. It is also investing in roasting and brand development, creating certified coffee for local markets while building a stronger identity abroad. This forward-looking vision is rooted in Nicaragua's deep coffee heritage. Coffee has shaped the country since the mid-19th century and became its leading export by the 1870s. Today, Nicaragua is among the world's twelve largest producers, with harvests topping two million 60kg bags each year.
